Nursing resumes are weirdly easy to underwrite.

You can have years of hard patient care behind you, manage chaos without blinking, train new staff, catch medication issues before they become problems, and still end up with a resume that reads like this:

"Responsible for patient care, documentation, medication administration, and team communication."

That bullet isn't wrong. It's just too flat. It makes a busy ICU nurse, an outpatient RN, and a new grad all sound almost the same.

In 2026, that hurts you. Hospitals, clinics, travel nurse agencies, and healthcare systems still need nurses, but many now use applicant tracking systems before a recruiter ever reads your resume. Those systems don't understand your story. They compare your resume to the job description, look for matching license terms, specialties, clinical skills, certifications, software, and shift details, then help sort the stack.

A good nurse resume has to do two jobs at once. It needs to pass the software scan, and it needs to make a nurse manager think, "Yes, this person can handle our floor."

Here's how to write one that does both.

Start with the role you're applying for

Don't build one generic nursing resume and send it everywhere. I know, nobody wants to rewrite a resume after a 12 hour shift. But a med surg job, ER job, school nurse job, and outpatient infusion job are asking for different proof.

Before you edit anything, read the posting and mark the terms that describe:

  • Unit or setting: ICU, ER, telemetry, med surg, labor and delivery, pediatrics, home health, outpatient clinic

  • License: RN, LPN, LVN, APRN, NP

  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, TNCC, CNOR

  • Patient population: adults, pediatrics, geriatric, oncology, cardiac, trauma, post-op

  • Tools and systems: Epic, Cerner, Meditech, eMAR, Pyxis

  • Work style: charge nurse, preceptor, triage, care coordination, discharge planning


Then make sure the most relevant terms appear naturally in your resume. Not stuffed into a keyword pile. Just present in the right places.

For example, if a posting says "telemetry RN with Epic experience, ACLS, cardiac monitoring, and patient education," your resume shouldn't only say "registered nurse." It should say those things where they're true.

A sharper summary might read:

"Registered Nurse with 5 years of telemetry and cardiac stepdown experience, including Epic documentation, ACLS certified care, rhythm monitoring, discharge teaching, and precepting new nurses."

That's not fancy. Good. Fancy is not the point.

Write a summary that says what kind of nurse you are

Your resume summary should be short. Three or four lines is enough. It should answer the question a hiring manager is already asking: "What setting has this person worked in, what can they handle, and are they close to what we need?"

Weak summary:

"Hardworking nurse with strong communication skills and a passion for patient care. Seeking an opportunity to grow in a healthcare setting."

Better summary:

"Registered Nurse with 6 years of emergency department experience in a Level II trauma center. Skilled in triage, rapid assessment, IV medication administration, Epic documentation, and family communication during high stress cases. ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certified."

See the difference? The second one gives a manager something to work with.

If you're a new grad, don't pretend you have years of experience. Use clinical rotations, certifications, and the setting you want.

New grad example:

"New graduate RN with 720 clinical hours across med surg, labor and delivery, pediatrics, and community health. BLS certified, experienced with head to toe assessments, medication pass under supervision, patient education, and Epic chart review during clinical rotations. Seeking an entry level med surg RN role."

It's honest. It also gives the ATS and the recruiter real terms to match.

Put licenses and certifications where people can find them

Healthcare recruiters scan for license and certification details fast. Don't bury them in a paragraph at the bottom.

Add a small section near the top:

Licenses and certifications

  • Registered Nurse, New York, license active through May 2028

  • BLS, American Heart Association

  • ACLS, American Heart Association

  • PALS, expires November 2027

  • NIHSS certified


If the job requires a certification you have, use the exact acronym from the posting. If it says "Basic Life Support (BLS)," your resume can say "BLS." If it says "Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support," use "ACLS" too.

Also, don't include expired certifications unless you're actively renewing them and the timing is clear. "ACLS, renewal scheduled July 2026" is better than leaving the manager guessing.

Turn job duties into proof

Most nurse resumes list duties. Strong nurse resumes show judgment, workload, and patient impact.

A duty says what was assigned to you.

A proof based bullet says what you handled and how well you handled it.

Weak bullet:

  • Provided care to patients and documented in EMR


Better bullet:
  • Managed care for 4 to 6 telemetry patients per shift, including rhythm monitoring, medication administration, Epic documentation, and discharge teaching


Weak bullet:
  • Helped with admissions and discharges


Better bullet:
  • Completed admissions, transfers, and discharges for a 32 bed med surg unit while coordinating labs, orders, medication reconciliation, and patient education


Weak bullet:
  • Communicated with doctors and families


Better bullet:
  • Updated physicians, case managers, and families on changes in patient status, discharge barriers, and care plan needs during daily rounds


You don't need every bullet to have a number. But numbers help when they're real. Patient load, bed count, shift type, unit size, charting system, training volume, and quality metrics all give your resume texture.

Use healthcare keywords without sounding like a robot

ATS keywords matter, but keyword stuffing makes your resume painful to read. The trick is to work terms into real bullets.

Instead of this:

"Skills: patient care, critical thinking, team player, IV, EMR, communication, safety, medication, education, leadership, quality, fast paced."

Write bullets like this:

  • Administered IV medications, blood products, and titrated drips per protocol while monitoring patient response and escalating changes in condition

  • Documented assessments, medication administration, wound care, and discharge instructions in Epic for 20 to 24 patient encounters per week

  • Educated patients and families on medication changes, post-discharge symptoms, follow up appointments, and home care instructions


The keywords are there, but they don't feel pasted on.

For a nurse resume, useful keywords often include:

  • Patient assessment

  • Medication administration

  • Care coordination

  • Triage

  • Wound care

  • IV therapy

  • Patient education

  • Discharge planning

  • Infection control

  • Fall prevention

  • Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or eMAR

  • Charge nurse

  • Preceptor

  • Rapid response

  • Telemetry monitoring

  • Catheter care

  • Post-op care

  • Case management


Only use skills you actually have. A resume gets you the interview, but the interview will expose fake experience in about three questions.

Show your specialty clearly

Nursing is not one job. A recruiter looking for a pediatric ICU nurse doesn't want to decode a generic hospital resume.

Make your specialty obvious in the summary, job title line, and bullets.

For ICU:

  • Cared for 1 to 2 critically ill patients per shift, including ventilated patients, titrated drips, central lines, arterial lines, and rapid changes in condition


For ER:
  • Triaged 25 to 35 patients per shift in a high volume emergency department, prioritizing acuity, initiating protocols, and coordinating handoffs to providers


For labor and delivery:
  • Supported laboring patients through assessment, fetal monitoring, medication administration, provider communication, and postpartum education


For outpatient clinic:
  • Managed rooming, phone triage, medication refills, patient education, and care coordination for 60 to 80 patient visits per week


For home health:
  • Completed in-home assessments, wound care, medication reconciliation, patient education, and care plan updates across a weekly caseload of 25 patients


The more specific you are, the easier it is for the right manager to say yes.

Don't hide leadership if you have it

A lot of nurses do leadership work without calling it leadership. Precepting counts. Charge nurse shifts count. Training new hires counts. Leading huddles, improving handoffs, helping reduce falls, and catching workflow issues count.

If you did it, say it plainly.

Examples:

  • Served as charge nurse for a 28 bed med surg unit, assigning patient loads, supporting escalations, coordinating admissions, and communicating staffing concerns to leadership

  • Precepted 8 new graduate nurses on medication safety, documentation standards, shift organization, and provider communication

  • Helped revise discharge education workflow, reducing repeat patient questions and improving handoff consistency between nurses and case management


Notice that last one doesn't claim a giant miracle. It just explains a real improvement. That's enough.

Handle employment gaps without overexplaining

Nurses have gaps for all kinds of reasons: burnout, family care, relocation, school, health, travel contracts ending, licensing delays. You don't need a dramatic explanation on the resume.

If the gap is short, don't mention it. If it's longer, add one clean line if it helps the reader understand the timeline.

Examples:

  • Career break for family caregiving, 2024 to 2025

  • Completed RN to BSN program, 2025

  • Relocated to Texas and completed state licensure process, 2026


Then move on. The resume should spend more space on what you can do now.

If you're returning after time away from bedside care, add recent training, CEUs, certifications, simulations, volunteer health work, or refresher programs. Show that you're not walking in cold.

Format your nurse resume for ATS and tired humans

A nurse manager may read your resume between meetings, staffing problems, and patient flow issues. Make it easy.

Use:

  • One clean column

  • Standard headings like Summary, Licenses and certifications, Skills, Experience, Education

  • Normal fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman

  • Job titles, employer names, city, state, and dates

  • Bullet points, not dense paragraphs

  • A PDF unless the application asks for Word


Avoid:
  • Photos

  • Icons for phone or email

  • Skill bars

  • Two column templates

  • Tables that scramble when parsed

  • Tiny font to squeeze in one more bullet


This is not the place to be cute. Clean wins.

What to put in your skills section

Your skills section should support the job you're applying for, not become a junk drawer.

Good nursing skills section:

Clinical skills: patient assessment, medication administration, IV therapy, wound care, telemetry monitoring, discharge teaching, infection control

Systems: Epic, eMAR, Pyxis

Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS

Specialty: cardiac stepdown, post-op care, rapid response support

Bad nursing skills section:

Communication, hard worker, detail oriented, passionate, reliable, organized, Microsoft Word

Soft skills matter in nursing, but they work better inside bullets.

Instead of saying "communication," prove it:

  • De-escalated anxious patients and families by explaining care plans, expected wait times, and next steps during high volume shifts


That's stronger than a lonely word in a skills list.

Resume examples by experience level

Here are a few bullet sets you can adapt.

New grad RN:

  • Completed 720 clinical hours across med surg, pediatrics, maternal health, psychiatric nursing, and community health settings

  • Performed head to toe assessments, vital signs, wound dressing changes, medication administration under supervision, and patient education during clinical rotations

  • Used Epic chart review to follow labs, medication orders, provider notes, and care plans for assigned patients


Experienced med surg RN:
  • Managed 5 to 7 adult patients per shift on a 36 bed med surg unit, including post-op, diabetic, cardiac, and respiratory cases

  • Administered scheduled and PRN medications, monitored changes in condition, coordinated provider updates, and documented care in Cerner

  • Educated patients on medication changes, wound care, mobility precautions, and discharge instructions to support safe transitions home


Travel nurse:
  • Adapted quickly to 3 hospital systems and 4 charting workflows while maintaining safe care across 13 week med surg and telemetry contracts

  • Floated between telemetry, stepdown, and med surg units based on staffing needs, managing patient ratios from 4 to 6 per shift

  • Built rapport with permanent staff by taking difficult assignments, asking clear workflow questions, and following unit protocols


Nurse manager:
  • Oversaw daily operations for a 42 bed unit, including staffing, patient flow, quality audits, performance coaching, and escalation support

  • Reduced missed meal breaks by adjusting assignment patterns and improving charge nurse coverage during peak admission windows

  • Coached 12 nurses through documentation standards, patient communication concerns, and annual competency requirements

Common nurse resume mistakes

The biggest mistakes are usually small.

Using one resume for every job. A school nurse posting and an ICU posting should not get the same version.

Leaving out certifications. If ACLS is required and you have it, don't make the recruiter hunt.

Writing vague bullets. "Provided patient care" tells me almost nothing. What kind of care? What patient load? What setting? What tools?

Overloading the skills section. A wall of 40 keywords looks desperate and doesn't help a manager picture you on the unit.

Using a pretty template that breaks parsing. The ATS doesn't care that the template looked nice on Etsy.

Forgetting outcomes. If you trained people, improved a process, caught issues, reduced delays, handled high acuity patients, or supported safer discharges, put that in the resume.

A simple nurse resume checklist

Before you apply, check these items:

  • Your target job title appears near the top

  • Your license is active and easy to find

  • Required certifications are listed with current status

  • The resume includes the unit, specialty, or setting from the posting

  • Your bullets include patient load, acuity, tools, and responsibilities

  • Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other systems appear if relevant

  • You removed generic phrases like "hard worker" and "team player"

  • The format is one column and ATS friendly

  • The resume is tailored to the job description, not just your last job


One final tip: write for the nurse manager first, then clean it up for the ATS. The software can get your resume through the door, but a person still has to believe you can handle the shift.

If your resume makes that easy to see, you're already ahead of most applicants.
